The Heavenly Citizen Must Take Off
The Old Clothes Of Sin
“Put to death, therefore , whatever belongs to
your earthly nature: sexual immorality,
impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is
idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is
coming . . . . But now you must rid yourselves of all
such things as these: anger, rage, malice,
slander, and filthy language from your lips.
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken
off your old self with its
practices” ( Col. 3:5–6; 8–9 ).
The “therefore” in verse 5 points back to the
believer’s position in Christ taught in
Colossians 3:1–3 . Our response to our new
heavenly position in Christ must be that of taking
off the old clothes of sin. Colossians 3:8 says,
“But now you must rid yourselves of all such
things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and
filthy language from your lips”
